Harlan County is host to a variety of heritage days and festivals such as the famous Poke Sallet Festival, held the first weekend in June each year. There are museums and historical sites hidden throughout the County, including the Portal 31 Mine Underground Rail Tour, which takes you through a coal mine originally operated by U.S. Steel.
Nestled between the steep, sweeping slopes of Pine and Black Mountain is some world-class golf at the Sleepy Hollow Gold Course and the Lynch Country Club. Sleepy Hollow, which is being developed as a Build-Ready Business Park, could be the picture perfect paradise in the mountains with plentiful hiking, scenic drives, and picturesque campsites. There are also parks throughout the communities of Harlan County, with facilities for soccer, and baseball, and fun for children of all ages.
Perhaps Harlan County’s best attribute is the plethora of recreational activities available to its residents and tourists. There are state parks, several hiking and biking trails, and countless Mom-and-Pop shops and restaurants throughout this scenic county. The most visited attraction is the Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area, an ATV park with more than 7,000 acres waiting to be explored.
